PowerBait Rig for Stocked Trout: Hook, Leader, Weight, and Depth
The exact sliding-sinker PowerBait setup for stocked trout, with hook size, leader length, casting depth, bite detection, and fixes for common problems.

A sliding-sinker rig lets a trout take floating bait without immediately feeling the full weight. The leader lifts the bait above bottom debris while the sinker holds the cast in place.
Exact setup
Rod tip → 4–8 lb main line → 1/8–1/4 oz sliding egg sinker → small swivel → 18–30 in 4–6 lb leader → size 8–12 single hook → floating trout bait
Use a 6–7 ft light spinning rod. Start with a 1/8 oz sinker in calm ponds and move to 1/4 oz for wind, current, or longer casts. A 24-inch leader is a useful baseline.
Four steps
- Pinch off just enough bait to cover the hook, knead it firmly, and leave the point exposed.
- Test the rig at the bank; the bait and hook should float above the sinker.
- Cast beyond the near-shore shallows, let the sinker settle, and reel in slack without dragging the rig.
- Watch the rod tip or line. When a trout pulls steadily, reel down and sweep the rod rather than making an exaggerated hookset.
When it works
This rig is dependable for catchable-size stocked rainbow trout in ponds and reservoirs, especially in cool water. Shorten the leader when fish are feeding close to bottom; lengthen it above low weeds or soft muck.
Common failure modes
- Bait sinks: use less hook weight, fresh floating bait, or a smaller hook.
- Hook point is buried: reshape the bait and expose the point.
- Wind bows the line: increase sinker weight slightly and keep the rod tip low.
- Repeated missed bites: reduce bait size and wait for a steady pull.
Utah-specific cautions
Bait is not legal everywhere. Check the current Utah fishing guidebook, posted signs, and the water's special rules. Review average fish length in the DWR stocking database; tiny fingerlings may not be ready for this presentation.
Where to use it
Start with Bountiful Pond, Burraston Ponds, Deer Creek Reservoir, or Mantua Reservoir. Pair this with the rainbow trout guide, recently stocked trout guide, stocking reports, and stocked-trout gear kit.
