How to Fish an Inline Spinner for Utah Trout
A repeatable inline-spinner system for Utah trout: lure size, line, casting angles, retrieve speed, depth control, and strike-triggering pauses.

Inline spinners help shore anglers search water faster than a stationary bait rig. Depth and retrieve speed matter more than owning a box full of colors.
Exact setup
- 6–7 ft light or ultralight spinning rod
- 4–8 lb mono or 6–10 lb braid with a light mono/fluoro leader
- 1/16 oz spinner for ponds and shallow water; 1/8 oz for wind, depth, and longer casts
- Small snap or direct improved-clinch knot
Avoid clipping a bulky snap-swivel directly to a tiny spinner. If line twist becomes severe, put a small swivel higher on the leader.
Five-step retrieve
- Cast past the target and begin with a shallow retrieve.
- Give the rod tip a short pull to start the blade, then slow down until it barely keeps turning.
- Fan-cast left to right instead of repeating one lane.
- On the next round, count the lure down for two, four, then six seconds before retrieving.
- Add one brief speed-up or pause near shore; following trout often strike at the change.
When it works
Spinners shine when trout are roaming, wind creates surface chop, or you need to locate fish. Silver or natural finishes are a useful start in clear water; gold, copper, or brighter accents can help in stained water or low light.
Common failure modes
- Retrieve is too fast: the lure rises above the fish and looks unnatural.
- Blade never starts: use a short pull at the beginning and keep light tension.
- Every cast is identical: change angle and countdown before changing lures.
- Snags increase: raise the rod tip, shorten the countdown, or switch to a lighter spinner.
Utah-specific cautions
Check the Utah fishing guidebook for water-specific tackle and hook rules. Read the size column in the DWR stocking database; a high-count fingerling plant does not signal an immediate spinner bite. Pinch barbs where required and use single-hook options when appropriate.
