Bombarda (Sbirulino) Rig for Utah Trout: How to Rig It + How to Fish It

If you’ve ever watched trout cruise just out of casting range, the Bombarda rig (also called Sbirulino) is one of the best “bridge” techniques between spinning and fly fishing.

It lets you cast a tiny fly or micro‑lure a long way, while still presenting it naturally on a long leader.

Other names you’ll see: sbirolino, bombarda float, trout bubble.

The simple rig (diagram)

Main line → Bombarda float → bead → swivel → 3–6 ft leader → fly / micro‑lure

Step-by-step

  1. Thread the Bombarda float on your main line.
  2. Add a bead (optional but recommended to protect your knot).
  3. Tie on a swivel.
  4. Tie your leader (fluoro or mono) to the swivel.
  5. Tie on your fly/micro‑lure.

Leader length: what to use

Start here:

  • 3–4 ft: windy days, slightly stained water, or when you want more casting control.
  • 5–6 ft: clear water, pressured fish, bright conditions.

Longer leaders can help in clear water, but become harder to cast/land fish with.

Which float should you start with?

Bombarda floats usually come in:

  • Floating
  • Intermediate / slow sinking (best all‑around)
  • Sinking

If you’re buying one first: go slow sinking / intermediate. It gives depth control without constantly snagging bottom.

Retrieves that catch fish

Two simple modes:

Imitation (natural)

  • Stop‑and‑go for bug/shrimp style flies
  • Faster pulls + pauses for minnow/streamer style flies

Provocation (reaction)

  • Brighter colors + faster retrieves can trigger strikes, especially in colder water.

Where it shines in Utah

Use Bombarda when:

  • you need long casts from shore
  • trout are cruising in clear water
  • you want a lighter presentation than a spoon/spinner
