Utah’s Best Stocking Tool: How to Use the DWR Database to Find Recently-Stocked Fish Near You
Utah DWR calls its fish stocking database a “hidden gem.” Here’s how to use it to find recently-stocked trout and other fish near you — by date, county, species, and water.

Utah’s Best Stocking Tool: How to Use the DWR Database to Find Recently-Stocked Fish Near You
If you’re trying to catch stocked fish (especially trout), the biggest “unfair advantage” isn’t a secret lure — it’s knowing where fish were planted recently.
Utah’s official fish stocking database is one of the best tools you can bookmark, and it’s updated with real stocking records.
The official tool (bookmark it)
- Stocking database: https://dwrapps.utah.gov/fishstocking/Fish
Utah DWR also references this tool from their main fishing hub page under “See what’s been stocked.”
The 5 filters that matter most
When you open the stocking database, focus on these:
-
Date range (start here)
- If you’re planning a weekend, check the past 7–21 days.
-
County
- Narrow it down fast to avoid scrolling.
-
Waterbody name
- Use this when you already have a target (or want to verify a rumor).
-
Species
- “Rainbow Trout” is the most common for community fisheries and many reservoirs.
-
Quantity / size
- Not all stockings are equal. A small plant can fish out quickly at high-pressure ponds.
A simple “two-stop” planning workflow
Do this before you drive anywhere:
- Pick one close water (your primary).
- Pick one backup within 20–45 minutes.
- Check the database for both waters (same date range).
- Choose the one with the best recent activity.
If your primary looks stale, swap it out before you leave.
Pair it with a map tool
The stocking database tells you what and when. Pair it with a map tool for where to access:
